What Happens When SSL Certificate Expires. Information relating to what happens when SSL certificate expires as well as a look at the process of renewing SSL certificates.

What Happens When SSL Certificate Expires?

It is important to keep SSL Certificates up-to-date to ensure that your customers can conduct secure, authenticated transactions on your site without interruption. So what happens when SSL Certificate expires? The certificate becomes invalid, and you will no longer be able to secure transactions on your Web site. If this happens the visitor's browser will display a warning upon entering the Web site area that was supposedly protected with your SSL certificate.

The digital certificate provider who sold you your certificate will prompt you to renew your SSL certificate prior to the expiration date and there is no need to wait until your certificate expires before you renew. If you renew early then most providers will just add any remaining days onto your new certificate. In most cases you can renew up to 90 days before your certificate expires.

What Happens When SSL Certificate Expires?

The process of renewing your SSL certificate will vary slightly depending on which digital certificate provider you purchased it from. With Digicert the process of renewing is very easy, all you need to do is:
  • Log into your DigiCert Customer (Web-PKI) Account
  • Click the "Web-PKI Manager" link (under quick menu - located on the left side)
  • Click the Renew link for each order which is about to expire (complete order)
  • DigiCert receives your order and our validation staff performs a quick cross-check (Whois & Organization records)
  • Your Renewed SSL Certificate is approved and ready to Download/Install
